DIMENSIONAL FUND ADVISORS HEADQUARTERS, PALISADES WEST
Construction of Highway 360 outside of Austin sheered through the site, creating the cliff-like edge. The vertical cut through horizontal layers of rock exposed a visual record of the site's formation over time. Our design treats the Palisades West campus as a geological formation, inspired by the actions of plate tectonics - bending, folding, shifting, sliding, and breaking - evident in both the highway cut and the rolling topography of the surrounding Texas Hill Country. The two curved office buildings refer to the shifting and up-ending of layers. Sliding planar volumes not only break up the overall mass of each building, but also emphasize the resulting jagged ends. Horizontal plate shifts create cantilevered canopies. Terraced gardens fill the 'faults' between with outdoor rooms that physically connect the buildings and visually connect with the views beyond.
