GATEWAY VILLAGE TECHNOLOGY CENTER

Charlotte, North Carolina

Gateway Village Technology Center revitalized the depressed area to the west of Charlotte's main downtown corridor. This fifteen acre, mixed-use complex sparked development by reinterpreting the generic urban 'perimeter blocks' prescribed by the city’s planning guidelines. Garden plazas, paths, and open-air atria connect housing units, offices, shops, and parking. The Promenade forms the heart of the complex - a great public space, a social center, a magnetic attractor. This vibrant center of downtown has become a nucleus for new offices and apartments as well as a major culinary institute. In addition to becoming a twenty-four hour ‘hang-out’ for a late-night wi-fi culture, the Promenade has become Charlotte’s most desirable location for festivals, charity fund-raisers, and concerts.
