FROST BANK TOWER

Austin, Texas

The Frost Bank Office Tower balances the visual impact of the cityscape with the physical experience of the streetscape. It responds to the immediately surrounding low-rise buildings as well as the existing Austin skyline which is dominated by the dome of the historic Texas State Capitol. An eleven-story parking garage forms the base of the thirty-three story tower; a two-story public lobby opens to a canopied outdoor plaza; street-level restaurants activate the pedestrian experience. Shifting the relative prominence of materials - from buff-colored native limestone to glass- allows different readings of scale to emerge. At street level, it respects the context of the surrounding older buildings, using a formal language and materials appropriate for human-scaled public spaces. From a distance, the profile of its multi-layered glass crown adds a complementary new landmark to Austin's skyline.
