DUKE EYE RESEARCH INSTITUTE

DUKE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER

Durham, North Carolina

Duke Eye Center pursues a three part mission: patient care + research + education. A primary focus in their search to find cures for blinding eye diseases is 'translational research' – a continuous feedback loop that brings basic science research discoveries to the clinic, then takes clinical insights back to the lab to generate new research ideas. Integrating these activities requires active communication between researchers and clinicians. By reconsidering how the built environment might catalyze ground-breaking discoveries, we designed interconnected spatial and physical relationships that accelerate the process. The core of each laboratory floor houses an equipment room, walk-in refrigerator, a dark room and other shared areas, leaving the light-filled outer perimeter available for lab benches. Shared facilities and free circulation encourage interaction.
